Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1894-1961) was a French writer and doctor whose novels are antiheroic visions of human suffering. Accused of collaboration with the Nazis, Céline fled France in 1944 first to Germany and then to Denmark. Condemned by default (1950) in France to one year of imprisonment and declared a national disgrace, Céline returned to France after his pardon in 1951, where he continued to write until his death. His classic books include Journey to the End of the Night, Death on the Installment Plan, London Bridge, North, Rigadoon, Conversations with Professor Y, Castle to Castle, and Normance.Ralph Manheim (1907-1992) was an American translator of German and French literature, as well as occasional works from Dutch, Polish and Hungarian. The PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation, a major lifetime achievement award in the field of translation. is named in honor of Manheim and his work.William T. This is a review of the Kindle edition of the English language version ...Voyage au bout de la nuit was originally published in 1932, As a first novel, it was quite successful, and has remained something of a lurking classic. It is loosely auto-biographical. The story runs through Céline's traumatic experiences of WW1, through mostly miserable experiences in tropical Africa and the USA and back to France, where the author-narrator becomes a financially unsuccessful medical doctor in Paris. His style is sometimes choppy, jumping from scene to scene, highly vernacular and often makes use of gross exaggeration. There is a lot of slang - somewhat different from that of today - and I bought this English version to help me through reading the French original. I am a reasonable speaker of French, but there is so much "argot" and unusual colourful expression in this book that there are many passages which I found difficult. Thus I have been able to compare this translation with the original as I go along. It is the only translation I know, and may not be the best, but it certainly captures the flavour of the original. Mostly, the English runs close to the French, but there are many places where the translation is very free: inevitable with a work like this. In these instances, the translator has correctly gone for a view of the woods, rather than the trees. I would definitely recommend this version to anyone who either cannot or does not wish to read the original or whose French, like mine, is not quite good enough to handle it without a crib.
"First of all read Céline; the greatest writer of 2,000 years" (Charles Bukowski 1969). The book describes the life of Bardamu (evidently Celine's alter ego), a cynical, estranged, indifferent yet sensitive and easily bruised young man. Bardamu is introduced on the eve of WWI when he volunteers and is cast into the charnel house of the inhuman nightmare of that war. He is wounded, spends more than a year recuperating from his wound and shell shock, deserts, and continues his life journey through French colonial Africa, America, and France again. Like Celine himself, Bardamu becomes a physician, his career following hanging his shingle in the miserable and poor Paris quarter and eventually becoming a nolens-volens director of a psychiatric sanitarium for the bigoted rich outside Paris.Reading 'The Journey to the End of the Night' is a literary and emotional experience. Stylistically it has the immediate shocking effect of profane, chaotic, and almost manic prose with insightful psychological observations. For example, his description of the increasingly violent fight between Robinson and his lover, Madelon, is a masterpiece in its genre. He is still considered as one of the most influential literary stylist of the 20th century. There is host of great novelists that owe him their style, including Mailer, Miller, Vonnegut, Keruac, and many others.From the social-human angle, Celine is again a master in describing the depressive character of humanity and of human fate. His protagonists are bigoted, avaricious, indifferent to all suffering, manipulative, and mainly nauseated with life that has no meaning. His loves are reduced to indifferently bestial sex, his friendships to temporary respites from boredom, his lusts tempered by apathy and distaste. His view of humanity is as sharp and focused as that of Camus or Sartre, but instead of attempting to see the saving graces of human character he only sees the one-way descent into the end of the night.Celine's reputation was tarnished by his later adherence to the Nazi philosophy and his increasingly rabid antisemitism. It is pretty clear that anybody with humanistic outlook should shun Celine as a person. Yet, one cannot deny him greatness as a writer.
Someone said this is a book for young people, and I think that is true. Celine's writing appeals to those who have little confidence, who are afraid of the world, afraid of failure. His protagonist models a way of dealing with failure and defeat. He doesn't scheme to overcome the scary forces arrayed against him. Instead, he simply walks ahead into the chaos with eyes and ears open. In opening to this imperfect world, he is able to transform tragedy into comedy.Through observation and writing, he proves to himself that he was greater than his circumstances all along, that he never had to be afraid after all. Celine takes up the garbage strewn about by a ridiculous, meaningless plot line and weaves gold out of it. Here is an example, a scene where Ferdinand acts decisively (a near unique occurrence), to leave his prostitute lover Molly in America and return to France:“'You’re already far away, Ferdinand. You’re doing exactly what you want, aren’t you? That’s the main thing. It’s the only thing that counts …'The train pulled in. I wasn’t so sure of my plans once I saw the engine. I kissed Molly with all the spirit I had left … I was sad for once, really sad, for everybody, for myself, for her, for everybody.Maybe that’s what we look for all our lives, the worst possible grief, to make us truly ourselves before we die."Similar gems appear on every page of the book. It's not for everyone, I admit. Celine's writing reminds me of sad country music. It inspires me with its sadness. If you're discouraged or disappointed with yourself, reading Celine can reassure you. "Well this apparently worthless man opened up to his worthless circumstances and made something beautiful with them. If he can, maybe I can. I don't have to win, just stay awake and accept whatever life gives me."
You have to read this book to appreciate it ... a curmudgeon who engages in hyperbole.... would have gone down as a great writer but he wrote anti Semitic tracts so the French made him a scapegoat after WWII.I laughed myself sick in some parts.

If you are a Buffett or Munger or Berkshire Hathaway fanatic, you will love this book.However, if you merely admire these gentlemen's competence and, so, actually expect to learn something material from a book which boldly states that it will teach you such, you will be very disappointed.The authors apparently have attended the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meetings for the past 30 or so years and have written a gossipy summary at the end of each year for their friends and associates.Apparently realizing that Buffett and Berkshire are not "branded" and, so, a book about them is highly salable, they have decided to profit from their decades-old summaries by binding them together and implying there are "lessons" to be learnt.There are not.Unless, you really find something enlightening in an annual update on the insurance premium float held by BH or want to hear repetitively how much Buffett admires Ajit Jain's ability to increase that float amount when Buffett felt there was no other insurance avenues to gain such increases.You will "learn" that Buffett and Munger have little use for most of Wall Street's practices and financial theory. However, you will not particularly learn much more since all the authors do is state these gentlemen's position and, thereafter, report a "sassy" zinger by Munger or a "playful quip" by Buffett. I read this book to learn financial knowledge, not to learn that Munger is a bit of a jerk and Buffett is not as funny as he seems to think he is.Even when financial theory is discussed, it is only to have Munger state it is "stupid" or, for variety, "dumb".Portfolio theory is stupid, derivatives are stupid, executive compensation practices are stupid.On the other hand, Berkshire Hathaway's practices are the "best".Of course, the analogy is often false. BH is a conglomerate, yet Munger keeps treating it as if it were a simple corporation which happened to provide insurance coverage, along with Coca Cola, chocolate, railroad services, etc.It is not. It is a conglomerate which owns several other corporations. So, stating that BH's policy of letting the CEOs of these corporations control the business and, otherwise, basing their salary on their corporation's profit is not particularly actionable in a regular corporation, where you cannot let a division operate independently nor allow an executive at a naturally profitable division make more salary than an executive who operates a less profitable but perhaps more integral and vital division.Yet, Munger has no problem acting as if a conglomerate like BH is comparable to the typical corporation where salaries are not based upon the corporation's profit margin.Same goes for portfolio theory. Buffett and Munger have gotten rich from buying a few companies. Good for them. However, to assume everyone has the knowledge and capacity to select three or four stocks which will steadily rise in profit is, let me say it, stupid given the obvious fact that Buffett is famous for being able to do what no else can do, pick such stocks. Yet, repeatedly we read Munger stating portfolio theory is stupid because a person can just pick three "solid" stocks and he/she won't have to worry about risk and, so, need not diversify his/her portfolio to reduce such risk.As to Buffett, a "cute" story is told about how he knew an owner of an excellent business who would implode once or twice and state he intended to sell his business. After a week of ranting, the owner would calm down and admit he had a good business which he loved. Buffett got close to a friend of the owner and told him to let Buffett know the next time the owner imploded. When the next implosion occurred, Buffett immediately called up the owner to ask how things were going and, as expected, the owner ranted about how he had enough and would sell his business to the next willing buyer. Buffett promptly states he is that willing buyer and the owner in his rage says its a deal. A week later the owner calls back and heavily implies he now regrets the deal, hoping Buffett will rescind. Buffett, however, plays dumb and so the owner has to go through with the sale.Despite the author's portrayal of this as a "cute" story, it is not. It is a ruthless use of another's known vulnerability for one's own gain. It is not a gentlemanly act. It is, however, an acceptable business act.The authors apparently realize this and, so, try to imply the story as a morality tale, the owner was "emotional" and Buffett was "even-keeled" and, so, the owner caused his own loss by being "emotional". Morale: don't get emotional when you are investing.However, the only "investor" in this story is Buffett, who has created nothing but simply cleverly bought other persons' realized visions. The owner actually built the business and, not surprisingly, he was more invested emotionally in it than would be an investor, like Buffett, who just sees the business as a money maker and so does not care a lick for the actual product, history, etc which were built with the blood and sweat of the owner. I accept Buffett's machination, however, my sympathy is entirely with the owner and Buffett's indifference is not a moral victory in my book.(Nota bene: I am discussing how Buffett and Munger come across in the book due to the author's failure to provide their reasoning. Please note that I fully expect that Buffett and Munger could easily explain the above depictions by the author as limited and an inaccurate summary since the author are more interested in showing Buffett and Munger as "personalities" than in actually explaining, let alone debating, the nuances of their investment philosophies)The book is an okay read. Pleasantly gossipy and Buffett's and Munger's policy of keeping it simple comes through, which is nice to see. Munger may overuse "stupid" and, otherwise, fail to expand on his reason for such dismissive opinion, however it is clear that he and Buffett believe investing is too glamorized by Wall Street and the media and if one were to "look behind the curtain" he/she would see investing is too often sold as a form of gambling rather than what these gentlemen do believe, that investing is placing one's assets in a slightly more profitable place than a US Treasury bond and, so, the investment should be nearly as secured as it would be in such a bond.Ironically, if there is any lesson to learn it is that one should not expect to get rich from investing - unless you can buy an insurance company and cleverly use its float to invest in other companies to increase profit and, thereby, use massive amount of insurance funds rather than just your meager personal assets to increase your own wealth.In the end, the book is pleasant fluff with no educational merit. So, if you find reading about Buffett, Munger, or BH to be "entertaining", you should read it. Otherwise, give it a pass. I wish I had.
The book encapsulates the incredible journey of Warren Buffett and Charlier Munger using the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meetings as a source of wisdom about their investment philosophy. The miracle of Berkshire Hathaway has been analysed numerous times - by way of an autobiography of Buffett, analysis of speeches, writings, investments, etc. to garner the secret sauce of the success - but using annual meetings and the proceedings is a rare but unique method. Buffett/Munger methods are timeless - the emphasis on large margin of safety (gap between value and price - focussing on businesses that have predictable cash flows like food, daily use items with high brand recall), use of intrinsic value as a decision point (not daily vagaries of stock price movements or use of hyper technical and fancy methods involving graphs, buzzwords, consultant driven acronyms), avoidance of "two super-contagious diseases, fear and greed", ignoring macroeconomic factors (rather solely focussing on value of the company), and lastly, able and trustworthy management (paper record of actual performance not interviews). On personal habits, their willingness and eagerness to learn, relearn and continuously updating their knowledge by reading, networking, and understanding are remarkable. Not that all decisions have been right - Salomon Brothers surely was, but on account of impeccable integrity and stature of Buffet, Hathaway could wriggle out without much ado. The book has lot of witty one liners - that convey the essence of what is Berkshire like "The danger of relying on historical statistics or formulas is that you end up betting on a 14-year-old horse with a great record but is now ready for the glue factory", or, "Where a large corporation might go bonkers and develop an entire floor of currency traders—probably hedging the company on currencies for which it had no exposure—Berkshire seeks to keep things simple, “so the chairman can sit and read annual reports all dayâ€, or It is crazy to give up something you know for something you do notâ€, or "Unlike a crowded theater where you can just leave your seat and run for the exit, in finance, you must find someone to take your seat", and "Buffett opined that envy is the least fun of the seven deadly sins because it leaves you feeling awful." The book is an essential read as it chronicles how brick by brick Berkshire was built, and the timeless concepts and thinking that went behind it.

I don't review a lot of books anymore, but this one got to me. There are lots of books written by people -- including me -- who had a hard time growing up. Abusive parents, poverty, oppression. War. There is a lot of awful stuff children endure.Trevor Noah endured all of it. Name something bad that a kid can experience and it probably happened to him. Born under apartheid, his existence was illegal. His birth was, as the title of his book suggests, a crime.As the child of a white father and a black mother under South Africa during apartheid, if he had been noticed by the authorities, they would have taken him from his family and put him ... somewhere. So merely surviving until the end of apartheid was no mean feat. Add to that extreme poverty, violence and life under the most oppressive, racist regime you can imagine. Actually, you may not be able to imagine it. I knew it was bad, but South Africa refined oppression into an art form.One of the other noteworthy things about this book was that I learned great deal about things I thought I already knew. I don't know if Noah intended it as a cautionary tale, but it is. Chilling.I didn't read the book. I listened to the audiobook because Noah reads it himself. He has a beautiful, melodic voice and a lovely cadence. It was a treat for my ears and my brain.You might think with all of this terrible stuff -- and some of it is really horrific -- that this would be an angry, possibly embittered man. But he isn't.He's funny when humor is possible. Even when he's serious, there is grace and wit -- plus a sweetness and generosity of spirit that's rather uplifting. I don't think I've ever said that about a book. It's not a word I use lightly. Trevor Noah is a rare person, able to appreciate the good stuff in his life and not obsess over the considerable amount of injustice he has experienced.I'm not usually a big fan of celebrity memoirs or autobiographies, but this is exceptional. If you have the patience, listen to it as an audiobook. Otherwise, consider reading it. He's a smart guy, a good writer, and an astute observer of humanity, government, politics, and relationships. Insightful, witty, and entertaining, I highly recommend it.
My decision to request Born a Crime has nothing to do with star power or fandom. I have to admit I have never seen Trevor Noah on the Daily Show. I requested this book when I learned it was about Trevor Noah's childhood in Apartheid South Africa.I started reading my ebook galley as soon as I was approved.I have to love a guy who finds comedy in tragedy and who gleefully spins yarns about experiences that would keep most of us in therapy for a lifetime. There is a genius in comedy that allows us to encounter devastating truths through the protective lens of laughter.The heroine of the book is Noah's mother, a feisty lady with a solid rock faith, a gal who snubs her nose at things that don't make sense. She makes mistakes, but always out of love. She takes huge risks but somehow Jesus is always there to catch her mid-fall.Noah was "naughty as s***" and a challenge to raise, but never hateful or mean. He learned to navigate Apartheid society's complex system that divided people in to three groups: black, white, and colored. How one was categorized was senseless. Japanese were put into the 'white' slot but Chinese into the 'colored'."The genius of Apartheid was convincing people who were the overwhelming majority to turn on each other. Apart hate, is what is was."Noah was 'colored' with a 'black' Xhosa African mother and a 'white' Swiss father, his very existence implicating his parent's crime. Had the police discovered them, his parents would be sent to jail and Noah sent to an orphanage. He spent much of his life hidden away, indoors. His parents could not be seen together with him, and his mother had to even pretend he was not her child.Noah was "colored by complexion but not by culture." He spoke multiple languages, Xhosa and Zulu and Afrikaans, and English, could fit into most groups, but felt affiliated to black culture.The book is a series of episodic tales, thoughtfully constructed, saving the climax of his family history until the end of the book, after we have come to know and understand them."I saw the futility of violence, the cycle that just repeats itself, the damage that's inflicted on people that they in turn inflict on others. I saw, more than anything, that relationships are not sustained by violence, but by love."The book is funny but is more than a diversive read, it enlarges our understanding of the world. Noah offers an understanding of South African history, colonialism, and Apartheid that is engaging and relevant. He shares the important things he learned and offers them to us. We should listen. We should learn.
Wow...I started this book yesterday and could not put it down. As a new mom myself, I read most of it on my Kindle while either nursing or holding my son, which was fitting as this is such a tribute to his mom. As a long time viewer of the Daily Show, I started watching as Trevor took over from Jon Stewart and while I've always thought he does a good job, I had no idea the depth of character and experiences that were below the surface of those cute dimples! As is fitting to the Daily Show atmosphere, Trevor discusses difficult topics like race often, but I don't think I will ever watch a segment the same way again after reading his descriptions of what it was like to grow up under and during the fall of apartheid. And I keep thinking back to some of his impassioned pieces prior to the election with a whole new appreciation.But this review shouldn't be about his celebrity on the Daily Show. It stands alone as a remarkable memoir and a completely engaging story that will appeal to anyone who's felt like an outsider. He is a wonderful story teller, finding the right balance between relaying his experiences, weaving in the social atmosphere around it and doing it in such a way that even as an American reader, I was able to visualize the communities he was describing in rich detail. Additionally, he was able to explain aspects of a post apartheid world that not only clarify the plight of South Africans today but also shed light on some of the challenges we are facing here in the US. He has a unique perspective and a wonderful voice that I hope to hear more of in the future.

I never cease to be amazed at the quality of the scholarship, the deep 'explainings', the copious notes, the clarity of the thoughts as explained in translation. Nathan Wolski, in no way disappoints. This is an amazing series of translations, and a sheer joy to sit, ponder and to read. I am so glad Daniel Matt, Nathan Wolski and the others who contributed to this series have the dedication they do - it shows. This collection has finally gotten a well deserved make-over. Please if you love good scholarship and have an urge to dig into something extremely deep, get this series from vol. 1 on... You won't want your Kabbalah Studies bookshelf to be with out it! imho.

oyful academia. I think that phrase best describes Daniel Matt's translation – with commentary – of the Zohar. PLUS no red string needed to reap the benefits of this incredible series.The author is much like a skilled chef: he not only understands what ingredients are in the product...in addition to where each ingredient has been grown...he also understands how they interplay with each other, how to mix them and how the final product will taste even before cooking it. Daniel Matt takes us into the garden that is the Zohar and acts as tour guide, storyteller and head chef.A word of caution however: this is a meal of esoteric thought. Some of the flavors you will be exposed to may seem a bit too scary taste or unfathomable. Like any feast of exotic food, you will need to commit yourself to the whole meal to gain perspective and appreciation for each course. The payoff will be a deliciously deep & rational understanding of the Zohar specifically and the Jewish mystical experience as whole.This is an important and valuable addition to anyone's library.
