JAY W. RICHARDS, Ph.D., is a professor in the School of Business and Economics at The Catholic University of America, a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute, the executive editor of The Stream, and the host of EWTN's upcoming TV show A Force for Good. He is the author of many books including the New York Times bestsellers Infiltrated (2013) and, with coauthor James Robison, Indivisible (2012). He is also the author of Money, Greed, and God, winner of a 2010 Templeton Enterprise Award. He has a Ph.D., with honors, in philosophy and theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.

I picked up The Human Advantage by Jay Richards with an open mind (I have not read the author's previous books) and a mild curiosity around the topic of the economy of the future. Overall, I thought the book flowed very well, interspersed with ideas and real life examples. While there certainly could have been additional development of the thesis, I got the sense that the author did not intend the book to be an exhaustive study into the new economy, but rather an introduction with appropriate historical reference. The points I took away were valuable - the pursuit of the American Dream is changing rapidly due to the massive increase in computing power which will eventually overtake every aspect of society. In order to take advantage of these changes, we need to be more virtuous, more courageous, more altruistic, ultimately, more human. This resounded with me, and it made sense at the same time. Technology has the promise to bring humans to levels of leisure and economic prosperity never before seen. The author also delves into some of the roadblocks in the way of the new economy, including regulation. He also touches on the materialists who would rather see humans as slaves to technology rather than masters of it. Jay gleefully pops the bubble of AI and machine learning (and it's supposed assumption to human level consciousness) - in a manner that is simple and easy to understand.

Please see some sample photos from the product below.Dr. Richards is both a business expert and someone well acquainted with formal ethics and morality theory. This rich background shines through in his book.Dr. Richards' premise is that there are some things that are innately human capabilities, and machines simply will never be able to replace those critical qualities. In particular (see the table of contents in the pictures), he highlights creativity, virtue (read that moral decision making), empathy, and resilience in the face of adversity (no matter how complex, a machine cannot overcome its programming and are therefore in some ways quite brittle).More than describing why humans will always have advantages over machines in some areas, Dr. Richards gives a clear message of HOPE in the face of the FEAR that many Americans seem to have developed about the future. When robots replace factory line workers, it can seem like humans are becoming obsolete. Dr. Richards argues persuasively that dangerous, repetitive, and boring work may be a good place for machines, but nurses, doctors, law makers, and a host of other jobs can ONLY be done adequately by humans.I found this book both compelling and motivating.It was a very quick read. The book is done in a very understandable, conversational tone.Being a career academic, the author supports his views with large amounts of citations.All in all, this is a very good book, and it is one that I will be giving as a gift to our close friends and children.I highly recommend this book.

Jay Richard’s new book, The Human Advantage, The Future of American Work in an Age of Smart Machines attempts to show us that human ingenuity will always win out over machine technology, that the creativity that resides in all of us is our ace in the hole in the age of smart machines. In “The Rise of the Robots” Jay asks if smart machines will have all the answers and the simple answer is NO. Our job is to invent new ways to keep robots doing work that people prefer to avoid because it is boring and perhaps dangerous. A good example is Ben Hamper’s outrageous book Rivethead, Tales from the Assembly Line. Few people are going to think it sounds like a good idea to stand in one place on an assembly line doing a monotonous and repetitive job all day every day after reading what Ben has to say. We want people directing robots to do these jobs and, in fact, that is the future. Jay Richard’s tells us that we “will need to focus on what is uniquely human, on our absolute advantage, on what no machine can replace.”With that introduction, Jay begins Part II of his book, Rebuilding a Culture of Virtue and starts with The Human Difference, What Only We Can Do. Jay refers to Malcolm Gladwell’s best seller Outliers that points out that successful people often spend upwards of 10,000 hours honing their skills and talents. I got my handy calculator out and determined that at 40 hours a week, successful people take five years to become proficient at what is important to them. Five years! We had better start now if we want to make a name for ourselves, and that is one of Jay’s points. The human difference is that people have the determination to do the work necessary to succeed.One of the most interesting parts of Jay’s book was his reference to resources available to us to keep growing. Help is available. I was not familiar with web sites like Galvanize, General Assembly, Udacity, edX, and Coursera. I went to the Internet and found all of these sites and was impressed once more by the enormous amount of help available to us on the Internet to assist us with our many problems and challenges. I have often used YouTube to search for information I need and continue to be impressed with that vast source of information. The point Jay wants to make is that we are not alone. Help is available if we know where to look for it and often success is a result of tapping into the many community resources now readily available to us.The title of Jay Richards’ book does not suggest that it will fall under the category of self-help literature, but that is where it belongs. Jay suggests ways for us to manage and channel “courage, antifragility, altruism, and collaboration” in order for us to pursue the new American Dream. He titles Part III of his book, How to Pursue Happiness. Jay discusses Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs which my professor at Yale, Clayton Alderfer, updated to three things – Existence, Relatedness, and Growth. We must satisfy our lower order needs to move to growth, becoming all that we can be and the satisfaction (I don’t say happiness) that we get from knowing that our life is well lived. The readers of this review who are lucky enough to work at jobs in which their talents are matched to an opportunity to use those talents to best advantage and then to be rewarded fairly for their contribution to their organization have the same daily challenges as the rest of us, but their work, a foundation for their life, is meaningful and rewarding. Our challenge is not just to simply have a job, but a career that utilizes the best in us. Jay’s book holds out that challenge and gives us resources to discover how to best use our talents. He is confident that Americans are more than a match for smart machines and most readers are going to agree with him.
