This book has a LOT of information that is very useful to me as a beekeeper with one hive. Most of the books you get are written for someone who will eventually have many hives. This one assumes you won't expand beyond your backyard. It has a lot of updated information about the varroa mite problem as well as the traditional problems. This new edition includes safe pest control techniques, top bar basics, urban beekeeping tips and tricks and 25 rules of modern beekeeping. I checked out the previous edition at the library and found it very helpful --this one is even more so. There are many pictures of various things going on in the hive, as well as harvesting the honey and wax. There are recipes for various creams, butters, and balms made from the wax, as well as tips on harvesting and marketing the honey. The only thing I didn't like was that it had no recipe for sugar water, pollen substitute or anything like that. They merely say you can purchase them. Fortunately, you can find these recipes on the internet.

Beginning bee keeper needing all the knowledge I can get. I have been in a number of classes and seen on online vids this book being referenced as the absolute necessity for anyone getting into the hobby. My wife ordered this book me for Father's Day. I got the book and took it to the pool while the kids swam. Between that afternoon and later that night, I cruised through this book. It is great. It is filled with great closeup pictures that really demonstrate each of the points that the author is making. It is a very comprehensive book that walks through almost every situation that arises in beekeeping; from the purchasing of the equipment, to what type of equipment/hives to get, to the different strains of bees, to hive inspections, to issues that may arise, to health issues and hive invaders to mistakes to avoid, and on and on. The book also includes a thorough walk-though of what needs to be done each season of the year in respect to working with the bees and the hives. The chapters of the book are:1) Starting Right2) About Bees3) About Beekeeping (including thorough discussion about honey)4) About Beeswax5) 25 Rules of Modern BeekeepingNOTE: Don't get fooled by only 5 chapters. There's almost 200 pages in this book, it's about 8"x10" in size, and for my old eyes, the print was rather small. There's a TON of info here. There is a huge wealth of knowledge in this book. It will be indispensable as my family moves forward with beekeeping. I will reference this book continually.I hope I have helped your purchasing decision of this product. An excellent introduction to Beekeeping. I've bought and read 5-10 books on beekeeping, this is the best so far! Covers everything in a well laid out, narrative style. Well organized and illustrated, leaves little out. If you are interested in bees or beekeeping and want a "bible", here it is. Start with this book. Good coverage of the three most popular types of hives, their variants and reasons for each style. Diseases and pests also well covered.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of current beekeeping. I appreciate the science Mr. Flottum uses in describing the current problems with pests and disease. For the beginning or hobbyist beekeeper, this book seems a perfect way to learn so much about the subject. This edition does cover Top Bar concepts with text and photos. For the Warre' enthusiast, the concepts of general beekeeping can apply, but I could not find reference to or mention of such hive management method or philosophy. I appreciated the explanation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) along with mention of many of the conventional toxic mite and/or disease control chemicals. Mr. Flottum encourages use of lighter weight hive bodies, such as medium or eight-frame boxes. Photographs are of high quality throughout the text. Finally, for the reader who wants to learn more about "natural" beekeeping and the potential for mite reduction through natural cell size, it would seem wise to compliment this text with other texts specific to natural cell size or Warre' hive management.

Well written, fun to read, numerous color illustrations.Even old time beekeepers will learn something in this wide ranging, yet thorough book. Why? Because the author, as editor on one the two most popular beekeeping journals, has used his access to latest information on everything from new ways of keeping bees, to the most update information on bee pests, like varroa and small hive beetle to produce by far and away the best beginner honey bee book ever published.I loved the '25 Rules of Modern Beekeeping' near the end of the book that neatly and memorably summarized the preceding beautifully illustrated 200 pages.Bravo, Kim Flottum, Bravo!

Great book for the starting beekeeper. This was recommended to me by a 40 year veteran of beekeeping. So if you are looking to keeping bees this is a must have in your library.
