This is one of the mushrooming collections of old SF, culled from ancient editions of the popular (then!) periodicals. I am old enough to have read those as they were new just off the press and even then they appeared to be of very uneven quality. Add to this the obvious aging factor, the mostly poor predictive value of SF vs real science to-day, and the dramatic change of mores (especially where women or minorities are concerned), and one gets a hodge-podge of stale and mostly boring stuff. But, even in this volume, there are some very good exceptions. Fritz Leiber's "The Snowbank Orbit" is exceptionally well-written. "The Very Secret Agent" might offend some feminists, but it brings a smile, "Waste Not, Want" might have been written to-day, "The Last Supper" is a good old surprise, surprise, "The Skull" is definitely a classic (I read it when it was new, and I enjoyed it as much fifty years later), "Love Story" and "Assassin" are pretty good, "And That's How It Was, Officer" is Damon Runyon clone, and, finally, "Seven-Day Terror" is pure pleasure. So if you have the blessed ability to drop a story after the first paragraph and only latch onto those that seem good, you might get several hours of pleasurable reading.

Now, I'm not so good at writing reviews. I think that those 5 stars speak for themselves. But what I realy liked about this collection is that most of the stories don't feel like they were written 60 years ago. It'a a must read for any sci-fi fan.

Older stories, but still very good ones. Nice and long, you get your money’s worth. Good editing, think I found one or two typos, but overall very good.

I would recommend this e-book. The stories held my attention and lead to late sleep time when read in bed.

This collection was incredibly disappointing. I have been reading science fiction for decades, and I have never come across such a misogynistic collection of badly written stories. I know it was a different time for most of these stories, and women were viewed through a terrible lens, but MOST of the best authors of the times tried to be more enlightened. This book was mostly badlly written, and the "science" was pretty lame as well. I would only recommend this book to someone who was desperate for bathroom reading. Seriously.

Most of the stories are so misogynistic that they were not readable...too many “helpless” women...
