Great cookbook with a Korean flair. It has everything you wanted on korean cooking from simple and traditional cooking to westernized and colonialism influences that happened in Korea like the WW2, Korean-Chinese War, Korean war, etcetera.
Exactly what I was looking for! I love trying new foods and am always interested to make some of the recipes but ethnic food isn't always available in traditional American cook books. This book not only has just about every Korean food that I've tasted before, but, also offers a chapter on tradition and culture of Korean food preparation and serving, and even a little bit about table manners! The 135 recipes themselves range in difficulty from easy to complicated, but most seem to be on the easy side. Each recipe gives you a "prep time" and a "cook time" so that you know before you begin what to expect. The only thing that the book lacks is photos of the finished product. The image on the front is nice and I would love to see what it is that I will be cooking, especially when some of the items I have never seen, nor heard of. *I received a sample of this item in return for an honest and unbiased review*
So many delicious recipes. I really miss living in Korea and this recipe book is fairly simple to follow and fix many of my favorite dishes. It will be hard to follow these recipes if you cannot get some of the items so you either need an Asian market near you or just order the products online from Amazon. Some dishes also need special equipment but there are ways around that if needed.
This book is the best korean cookbook i have ever found. I am half korean and grew up on korean dishes, but my mom could never translate measurement amounts other than by showing me how much she scoops by hand. This author shares stories that are similar that i could relate to. I am now better able to mimic my mom's dishes.Dishes differ depending on what region in Korea you are from. These are similar to my mom's region. Also, she has some more complex dishes here that my mom never had the privilege to enjoy in Korea because of her poverty. I have had wonderful experiences cooking with my mom and hearing her stories. This book is amazing. If you want to make authentic korean food, this cook book is simple and easy to understand.
I love trying different kind of cuisines and cooking is my hobby. I love reading books on different kinds of recipes and trying them out and sharing with my family. This cookbook was quite an interesting collection to my cook books.Korean food is quite different from what I had tried before. The book itself was really fun to read. I really appreciate it when the dishes are represented with the help of pictures as it really brings out a depth to cooking and makes it even mire interesting. There were many ingredients which I did not have in my daily cooking that I had to purchase for this kind of food. All in all the recipes were not that difficult and the taste was great. There were many simple recipes to try. I enjoyed cooing them.Sample received at discount or no cost for honest opinion.
I'm not much of a Korean food eater, I'm very picky with what I choose to eat. However, after receiving this cookbook, I'm actually excited to try some of the recipes! Not only does this cookbook have recipes but it also talks about the Korean food culture, rituals & etiquette, and essentials in the pantry and cookware. It starts you out with basic stocks, sauces, and marinades then moves onto different meals ranging from bar food to soups and stews to different meat entrees and even included drinks and sweat treats. One of the recipes that I'm highly interested in trying is the Korean-Style Sweet Potato Pizza. I love sweet potatoes and I love pizza, so why not throw them together! I am very excited to experiment with some of these new and delicious sounding dishes! I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who loves Korean cuisine and to those just looking for something new to try!*I received this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. This review is 100% my own opinion.*
I admit i do not know much about korean food. I know i love spicy food and flavorful food so i was eager to dive into this book. The first part is all about korean food and culture history and ettiquite. I loved learning about different table manners and how food is prepared and the different types. It was a great intro and really got me psyched. You can just tell the author loves her culture and food and took great care with this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and the images, though feq, look delicious. There are a few ingrediants i would have a hard time finding and would have to search online but not many. Most of the recipes are simple and short with a few requiring quite a few ingrediants. All of it sounds so yummy though! Its broken down into sections and there is even a dessert part. This is a great book for korean food newbies or seasoned cooks alike and i cant wait to try some of them.Note - I have recieved this item in exchange for an honest review.
I got this cookbook because my husband loves to try new things. The recipes are easy to follow, and I like that they are broke up in different sections such as, Appetizers, Side Items, Main Courses, and Desserts for example. I think some of the desserts look like they will be amazing, and I can't wait to try out different recipes throughout this cookbook. There are some ingredients that you can't just pick up at your local store so you do want to make sure you have a Korean market, or a place that offers or can order an ethnic variety of foods. Just because it's not a cooking style I'm familiar with I do wish it had more pictures in it to know what it is supposed to look like. *I received this product in exchange of my honest opinion/review.

I came across this book because I'm working on a project for a multi-national client that involves understanding what works best for presentations in different cultures. While you can find a lot of material about general cultural differences, Presenting across Cultures is the only book I have found that specifically addresses the impact of these differences on presentations.International travel and communication are so convenient nowadays that it's easy to forget that people in other cultures think and communicate differently than Americans do. If you make sales presentations in other countries and cultures, you need to adapt your presentations to fit those differences. In general, the book is outstanding. Having taught and made sales presentations in over 20 different countries, I thought I knew a lot about how to adapt my own presentations. Some of what I read in Hernandez's book validated adjustments I made, but I also learned a lot of new information that makes me wish I could go back and re-do some of them. In particular, I would like to reprise some of the questions I have answered in Asian countries. What I took as straightforward requests for information may have been my questioners' way of expressing flat-out disagreement. It also makes the point that some of the things that work best in US presentations, particularly to high level executives, may actually backfire in international settings. For example, in my own book and classes I stress the importance of being clear, direct and concise in your presentation. That works in the US because we're a low-context culture, and most of the meaning in our communications is contained in our words. In high-context cultures such as Asian countries, most of the meaning is contained between the lines, in their mannerisms, tone, and more importantly in what they don't say. So, being too direct in those cultures will make you seem rude and make the audience uncomfortable. As another example, it's usually a good idea for American audiences to clarify and add impact to your points with examples and stories, but Germans interpret these expressions as talking down to them. The best part of the book is the way Hernandez graphs 13 different dimensions along a line, and presents these visually for each of 16 countries/regions. If you're planning a presentation overseas, you can turn to each of the countries listed and see differences at a glance, and then read the overall explanations plus a list of dos and don'ts for each.My main quibble with the book is the small sample size that Hernandez used to calculate each dimension. 130 interviews across 16 countries/regions listed works out to only eight for each. Still, that's a bit like a blind man criticizing his guide for only having one eye. Hernandez also draws on his own experience with hundreds of participants in his workshops, and the descriptions ring true. Until someone comes along with something that is more extensively researched and validated, this book sets the standard. For starters you will want to read the introductory material, get familiar with your own culture, and compare it to those of others you may present to. But the best use of Presenting across Cultures is as a reference guide that you should pack along with your passport if you have to go overseas to make a business presentation. But you don't need to leave home to benefit. It's just as useful if you are in the audience listening to a presentation given by someone from a different culture. If you're American, for example, you might judge a presenter harshly for spending too much time on background context, but they may just be doing exactly what seems right to them.
Excellent contribution to the field. Thank you. Looking forward to future publications with additional countries included. This has helped me for an upcoming presentation.
And last! Someone has created a vademecum for the business speaker, that is easy to read and follow, succinctly addressing the cultural pitfalls and expectations that the business speaker may face in as many as 20 different countries around the world. Heretofore, those preparing for a presentation on foreign turf needed to rely on intercultural communication tips, websites like that of Toastmasters international and diagrams of management and listening styles, such as those presented by Richard Lewis, as well as information gathered by other intercultural communication researchers and scholars and friends who have done it before. Solid material has certainly been available, but generally requiring substantial hunt and seek.Part One, the first brief section of Presenting Across Cultures, tells of the book's methodology and what to expect when reading and using the material. Dealing with specific cultures in Part Two, Hernandez puts it all together for us in a relatively simple format. His procedure consists of a Presentation Profile for the culture being discussed, an Exposé of how specific cultural values make different demands on the speaker in response to audience expectations. The Exposé is the "what to do," part, containing tips about how to create the opening structure, develop content and points of persuasion. It tells you how to summarize, as well as deal with how questions and answers are presented and resolved in different cultural contexts. A few Final Points are added, followed by a quick summary of Do's and Don'ts reflecting the key points in each culture specific chapter. Each Presentation Profile shows where the culture in question lies on a continuum of dimensions, both the classical ones developed in the intercultural field, as well as half a dozen fresh ones extrapolated by the author, which have particular significance for the task of preparing and delivering a presentation. This is one of the more effective uses of the dimensional approach that I've seen recently. The dimensions are in fact used more as a framework and as a checklist. Consequently they are less conducive to stereotyping than is usual with the dimensional approach. The author carefully cautions the reader that these are starting points for knowing one's audience, not the kind of absolute definitions that are likely to lead in the direction of stereotypes.I found that Presenting Across Cultures, while simply written and a good read, serves even more as a reference book. It is the kind of work that I would keep on a nearby shelf to pull down and dive back into when called to face an audience that was unfamiliar to me, something that often happens on short notice, leaving me to thrash around in researching my audience. Hernandez's book provides both a shortcut and a kind of checklist that will remind me to better prepare, even for audiences in cultures that I am already somewhat familiar with. The final chapter of Part Two addresses the issue of Making Presentations to an Internationally Mixed Audience, a situation that we are all too often called upon to face these days, likely offering an even greater challenge than addressing listeners in culture specific contexts.Part Three discusses Using Visual Support. The style, color, text, size and quantity of PowerPoint and other presentational tools also offer cultural challenges. There are, in addition, two appendices. The first provides the speaker with the kind of lead-in words or, as Hernandez calls them, "signal phrases" that can be used to introduce or highlight the key steps or concepts of the presentation. The second appendix documents the questions that the author used in his research for the various cultures represented in the book, questions that we might also adapt for use with those who invite us to address specific audiences, in order to refine our understanding of the particular group and the context or situation that we will face in real time. The author states his intention to go further in a later edition to explore other cultures that are not found in this collection. This reader would like to see not only an expanded edition, but also possible an app or program that could be used for planning and preparing preparations. Personally, I would probably take Hernandez's key points for the kind audience I am expecting and plot them with MindMap software when constructing my future presentations. Perhaps we are in the twilight of printed books as we have known them, but, whatever the case, this particular work is an highly useful instrument that could benefit from being available in more than one medium.
