I found out all at once that I have hip dysplasia and need a hip replacement at 28 years old. It's all very scary to me. I knew NOTHING about the surgery or hip dysplasia for that matter. The book helped me know what's going on better. In ways that made it more scary but that's beside the point.

An excellent book regarding total hip and knee replacements and what can go wrong as well what doctors might be reluctant to explain to patients.While this book is extremely informative, on occasions it worries readers more than it might be needed especially prior to the surgery where patients might be overwhelmingly worried about their pending surgery.

Dr. Grelsamer gives the best advice! It’s like sitting down with your surgeon for a few hours for the conversation your own physician is probably too busy to have. Clearly written and easy to understand , this book should be given to every patient considering surgery.

I found this book to be extremely positive and informative.Although it focuses on the knee and hip, I would recommend it to anyone facing non-emergency surgery.This book does explain in layman's terms the actual proceedures for a knee or hip,however what I found most helpfull was the information on how to prepare for surgery,what to expect the day of surgery such as hospital proceedures, and post surgery.The technicalities of surgeries for other joints are easily obtainable on-line.It was the info mentioned above surrounding the hospital experience that I felt to be the most helpful and enpowering.

With experience and humor Dr. Grelsamer offers us what we need to know to decide about surgery and to prepare for surgery. In my case, total knee replacement surgery. This book is very up to date; the facts don't change. I read it several times before surgery and once afterwards. I have given copies to many friends soon to have, or who will eventually have, total knee replacement surgery. Grelsamer is an excellent surgeon but not one who rushes to surgery.

I bought this book as I am having total knee replacement in a few months. I know that because I had a total hip replacement in September 201l. This book was published a few years ago but I read the whole book and I will say that everything that was described in the section about hip replacement before, during and after the surgery is pretty accurate.

Somewhat dated, better books out there!

This really is just that, a great book. He explains in plain english the information you need to know about your hips and knees. He talks about when to go for surgery and when to avoid it. How to tell if you have a good Dr. and how to find a great Dr.He explains the anatomy and the principles in plain and clear english. He is truly an excellent writer and I cannot more strongly recommend his work.

MOTEL CHRONICLES was recommended on a website devoted to journal writing. It is non-sequential and many of the entries have the shape of honed work but all the same it is a good example of a writer's sketchbook, one used for practice and inspiration. More importantly, it is a window on Shepard's frame of mind in the years immediately following the Pulitzer Prize for BURIED CHILD. The seeds of later works can be found in this book.The entries swim back and forth from 1978 -1982, mapping the writer's peripatetic movement around the country, mostly in California and the west. It captures bits of his early identities, military childhood on the move, waiter, cowboy, actor, writer, friend, lover, husband, father. It is framed by portraits of being a child, the first entry is one of his earliest childhood memories in his mother's arms; the last is the adult caring for a mother felled by a brain aneurysm. This is no confessional or revealing autobiographical piece, however, just a writer at work pulling out inspiration from experience. Shepard is highly articulate, his portrayal of the contemporary west is priceless, and his poetry is not bad at all. The writing has an honest, non-star-turn quality to it.

This is the America I grew up hoping was there. No one captures that dream and reality like he did. He will be missed.

I purchased this book because I had just finished Shepard's more recent "Day out of Days." What I found most interesting is how Shepard has aged so damn well as a writer. "Motel Chronicles" was a great read yet is really just an excellent rough draft compared to his more recent work. "Motel Chronicles" starts to shape Shepard's great feel of the modern day lonesome dessert highway. What does stick out in this book is Shepard's humor. Muhammad Ali was once asked why he was always being so funny. He explained that he never tried to be funny. He just told the truth. Shepard does the same. In between tasting the dessert and feeling Shepard's despondent characters in freeze-fame so well, I found myself laughing out loud. Shepard makes no attempt at well-crafted jokes. Absolutely fabulous although I think the author has tried to put a better spin on himself than is shown in Shepard and Dark. There were actually a few pieces that I especially noted and some that elicited some good chuckles but the Nina Simone incident was especially wonderful.

I bought the for my wife. She is a big Sam Shepard fan.

A classic

For years I've loved movies with Sam Shepard and yet never read any of his writings. I decided first to read Motel Chronicles, as a play and movie were based on this book. It gives one some insight to author and actor. Plus it is good writing, and some poems, about every day experiences and reminiscing(?). I ordered this book on Amazon and it was a used copy in good condition.

This book is a sensible choice for someone considering doing heat treating of steel at home or in a small shop. There is a reasonable basic explanation of the theory, though not in the detail you can find in texts aimed at industrial users. There is quite a bit of practical advice on small-shop methods, which is not well-covered in industrial books.By the way, the web page for the book says the author is George Gently, but the book cover says Tubal Cain.

This book arrived ahead of schedule and I was pleasantly surprised that the author is one who I follow on YouTube. I found detailed answers to every question I have and a load of answers to questions I haven’t thought of. It is loaded with technical stuff, some of which may take me years to understand. It will surely become well used and dog eared in no time!

Great treatise on heat treating. Technical enough so I understood the WHY of heat treating, but not so dense that I couldn't read it. He also describes how to build several different heat treating ovens, which I found very useful.

It would be a good introductory test to tempering, but I was looking for more detail. The terminology is all British, as is the author. I speak metric just fine, but I am stuck with SAE steels and the author is stuck with British or Euro designations.

This is a great book for the home machinist. It's the best book I've read on heat treating. A must for the home machinist bookshelf.

This is a practical book. I have read about half of it. If you have a way to heat steel to the hardening temp.with a magnet and be able to temper the steel using a rosebud heater or a forge, this book is for you.

Written I think by an English author so some phrases are a little weird...my only real complaint was the tiny print font. I definitely needed my reading glasses for this one!

I found this book lacking in what I was looking for in a users guide. It lacks seriously in the Workshop Practice IMO.I was hoping for more practical data and instruction on how to achieve hardening and tempering for a less than controlled furnace environment for the more amateur user. I could get all the info contained here in internet search so I am dissapointed in the book . I think the title is somewhat misleading.

When reading about new advances in science it is often best to start with their discoverer, rather than with the "me toos" or the naysayers. Dr. Mike Morwood is an Australian anthropologist well qualified to undertake the now-famous excavations on the island of Flores in Indonesia. With a little journalistic help from a science writer he has turned in a solid book that is part travelogue, part excavation drama, and in the end, quite a shocking revelation about the rivalries that exist within the scientific community. The most common objections to the so-called Hobbits of Flores are that they are microcephalic sapiens, but as Dr. Morwood correctly points out, these arguments have been used before, and date back to the very first Neandertal and Java Man discoveries. Scientific support for the book comes with publication in "Nature" perhaps the most prestigious scientific journal, which also turned down articles submitted by the fossil's detractors. In the latter stages of the book "A New Human" examples of island biogeography and its association with gigantism and dwarfism are presented that should have been brought to the forefront, but this isn't a problem for a true believer. The most startling revelation is the fact that Morwood does not believe the Floresians are dwarf H. erectus (sorry italics not available), but instead H. habilis, or even descendents of Australopithecines! The author's open-mindedness about the importance of Asia and Indonesia to the overall evolutionary picture is refreshing and he makes an interesting point about the sudden appearance of H. ergaster in the fossil record that could be due to its evolution in Asia and a back-colonization of Africa. That pygmies have evolved at least four times in recent history is not in doubt, the Andaman Islanders, Negritos of the Philippines, and San Bushmen are not products of JRR Tolkien's imagination, and island biogeographic principles have clearly impacted the evolution of our ancestors, and other animals.

This book has been an invaluable resource, for two online courses, #FLHobbit and #FLDatingFossils! I highly recommend it solely for entertainment purposes, as well! I think that there is much to learn from H.floresiensis story, particularly the theory that larger brains equals hominins with intelligence closer to that of modern man! Read for yourself!

Bought by my husband as a gift as I was studying Homo Floriensis with an Australian University. Wish I had it before I started! Takes you through the finds, archaeology and the story behind the dig and Liang Bua Cave. An honest account of the wrangling behind the finds removed by other anthropologists. Very interesting story of how a new species was found on a small island and the animals and creatures that surrounded them.

I wanted to learn as much as I could about hobbits. I learned a lot about Mike Moorewood and his work which included some information about hobbits but nothing in any detail that I hadn't already picked up from the articles I've read. Its a fairly good read but if you are truly interested in learning about the new people as he calls them this book is going to be a big let down. I guess I'll put it this way the shaman of anthropology are keeping nearly everything locked up in a handful of magazines and unless you want to pay big bucks you aren't going to get that data. Crap, a lot of them won't bother to publish even half of what they find so in the end they are little better than pot hunters collecting souvenirs. Sorry Mike. Not all that nice to say right after you passed but you noted the problem yourself in reference to Jacob. Yes he dug in the earth and found important things but he didn't publish.I've just bought and read the only two books I could find on Hobbits and both were mostly about the author and only lightly touched on what the book was supposed to be about. I guess I'll end up dying without knowing.

This book was outstanding. A good review of several basic tenets in paleoanthropology plus an intimate, detailed and frank description of the interaction and opinions of various experts concerning this important find. I would strongly recommend it to anyone with an interest in human origins

Excellent book. You don't need to be an expert in paleoanthropology to understand the overall significance of what the author went through and what the new find of homo floresiensis means. A great book for anyone who finds human origins an interesting topic. Morwood seems to be a genuinely expert and compassionate person and it comes through in the book. Pretty magical stuff.

Practically ALL of us take life way too seriously, and many of us have failed to find or take the time to add some jocularity back into our lives, and I should know because I happen to be one of these individuals. I’m a romance author with several endeavors which I’m currently working on as well as a voracious book reviewer with 47 reviews already written so far this year.This being the case, you can’t imagine how happy I am to have bought a KINDLE copy of this book from the “Rascal” wrote it on Amazon. Rascal by some coincidence happens to be the name given on the book’s cover as its author.Rascal has done a marvelous job in collecting and sorting the hundreds of items contained in the pages of this book, items which go back to the days of our great-grandfathers and beyond, items which cause its readers to respond from giggles/chuckles to almost outrageous laughter depending on how much they can relate to what they’ve just read.Given the above it aches me not to give this book the 5 STARS it has gotten from me.

I'm only about halfway through this book, but it's a jokebook so that's probably far enough for a review.There were some pretty funny jokes in here, but I noticed there was some overlap and some of the formatting was annoying or poorly done. However, my biggest frustration was the amount of sheer sexism in the book. One does expect a certain amount of playing on gender stereotypes for humor, but some of the jokes were so intensely misogynistic that I was frowning at the book rather than laughing.Again, there were moments I laughed out loud, but I honestly barely gave this a 3/5 rating. Barely.

Have not made it through the whole book yet but this is a HUGE book of jokes. Not all of them are funny but most of them are! I have been enjoying a few pages at a time in order to be able to remember what I read well enough to retell them to some of my family and friends. Invariably there is a great amount of hilarity that ensues. Really like this book and recommend it highly. PLEASE NOTE this is not the type of joke book that you might want to share with young children as there are a good number of adult jokes within.

Most of this wasn't funny but I did really enjoy the questions and answers from the Hollywood Squares- the best of a great show.I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I learned of this book on Goodreads and read it using Kindle Unlimited. The book was loaded with jokes and separated by categories. Some of the jokes were hilarious, some were groaners, many were ones I already knew. The jokes are meant to satisfy a wide spectrum of what people will consider funny. This breadth makes it hard to truly love the book because I doubt anybody loves all types of humor. I laughed out loud a few times, but mostly I simply smirked at a reminder of an old joke or rolled my eyes at a terrible pun.

I laughed and laughed, while reading this book aloud, until I couldn't talk or see for the hysterical tears! This book will cheer anyone back to good health.
