About the Author

Rob Dunn is a professor in the Department of Applied Ecology at North Carolina State University and in the Natural History Museum of Denmark at the University of Copenhagen. He is the author of The Man Who Touched His Own Heart, The Wild Life of Our Bodies, and Every Living Thing, and his magazine work is published widely, including in National Geographic, Natural History, New Scientist, Scientific American, and Smithsonian. He has a PhD from the University of Connecticut and was a Fulbright Fellow. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Humanity has become dependent on three species of plant, Rice, Wheat and Sugar for over half its calories, and on Corn, Soybeans, Potatoes, Palm oit, Barley, Casava and Peanuts for another 25%. Each of those species is largely cloned and growing in extensive mono-cultures, readily vulnerable to decimation by a variety of pathogens. The Irish potato famine of the 19th century demonstrates what can happen when pathogens invade a mono-culture. We have not escaped from that kind of threat on a global basis. So far we have lucked out because of unsung heroes who have devoted their lives to preserving seeds and the knowledge of local farmers. As big agriculture takes over, that knowledge is becoming privatized and restricted to maintaining the profits of those companies. As the challenges to human survival increase, the number of people holding the fort is decreasing.This book includes the history of the banana, almost entirely made up of clones of a single subspecies and clonal rubber trees whose sap is still the sole provider of function sidewalls for all tires. Both histories include rampant devastation of earlier clones and present day threats to them and the national economies which depend on them.Rob Dunn's book uses true stories to illustrate the magnitude of the challenges to our food supply and what we can do as consumers to ameliorate the potential crisis. His telling is fascinating, understated and without histrionics. He is a scientist who lives according to what he has learned. This is a really interesting book about the risks associated with planting monocultures -- but it has virtually nothing to do with its title, and that's misleading. He mentions the title subject a couple times, with a sentence or two, but that's it. It's a book alerting us we need to find and save all kinds of seeds since so many farms simply plant one variety of each major crop.

Kind of confirms what those of us in the know fear.... greed rules the human species. Caution isn’t a consideration! It isn’t about feeding the world... it’s about forcing the world to buy what makes the BIGS rich. Well done Rob.

You'll be amazed at the heroic measures some people have taken to save seeds and by their actions, help save us all.

This book by NCSU's Professor Dunn will forever change the way you think about the foods you eat, the mechanisms and policies that brought them to your local grocer, your place in the web, and how frightening fragile the entire system is. History is presented with a fresh light and the future is considered in ways you may not have considered before.

This book was not quite as riveting as "The Man Who Touched His Own Heart", but was nonetheless very interesting and well done.

One of the most interesting and informative books that I have read in past year. Highly recommend.
