About the Author

Karen Katz has written and illustrated many books for children, including Can You Say Peace, My First Ramadan, Counting Kisses and Where is Baby's Belly Button. Long inspired by folk art from around the world, she was inspired to write her first book, Over the Moon, when she and her husband adopted their daughter from Guatemala, and she wanted to tell the story of welcoming Lena into their lives. Katz loves to paint and experiment with texture, color, collage and pattern. Besides an author and illustrator, she has been a costume designer, quilt maker, fabric artist and graphic designer. Katz and her family divide their time between New York City and Saugerties, New York.

Great book for young kids. My six year old had a lot of questions about why some kids at her school are diffent colors than her. She decided she perfered people who look like her. I bought a few books that talk about how everyone is different and that's okay. This was my favorite. I talks about people who are diffent shades of brown and labels them as things like "peachy tan" "cocoa brown" " chocolate brown" as well as several other browns. It help guide some positive discussion on how we are all different and that is a good thing. She enjoyed the book.

I got this book when my child and his friends started using the "peach" crayon as skin color for all their pictures. It was recommended by a teacher. He asks to read it regularly and spends a lot of time looking at all the people in it, and trying to match our hands to the colors on the inside cover art (lots of children's hands, very cute). We have had it for more than a year and it is still in heavy rotation. I also bring it out whenever we meet someone new that looks very different from his other friends, such as his swim teacher or soccer coach, or the kids in his summer camps. So far, he views differences in skin color, languages spoken at home by other children, and all types of names as a regular part of life, which is exactly what I am trying to do with this book. I deducted one star for one very minor detail, that one of the characters is described as a beautiful jewel toned princess instead of a food item like everyone else. I found it awkward and a little off putting to differentiate one character from the rest. It is still my favorite of all the other books about skin tones and differences. I also recommend the "multicultural" or "people colors" packs of crayons and markers, they have been a huge hit at our house.

Why I like it:A child of color tells mom that brown is brown while mixing paint for a portrait. Mom says there are all shades of brown and takes child on a neighborhood excursion to pay attention to all the beautiful shades of brown there are. Child gets the skin tone right in paintings of all the neighborhood family and friends. Pictures are great and my child asks to read it.

I understand the comments about stereotyping (ie: Mr. Kashmir and the Italian pizza maker).However, as a parent of brown children who have developed negative feelings about their skin color, I am tremendously thankful for this book. Making the skin tones associated with something delicious and therefore positive helped my children view themselves more positively.

I live in a super white bread area, so I try to buy books and toys that celebrate and normalize diversity. I love this book because it shows the gorgeous variety of tones our skin can be. My kids and I like to think about who we know that matches each skin color shown. Our differences are what make up beautiful!

Really liked this book. Bought it for my 5 year old granddaughter who loves to paint. The story is well written and illustrations are terrific. We are going to mix red, yellow, black and white paint next week and make various brown faces.

Such a good book! The story is about a girl taking a walk through her neighborhood and noticing the colors of everyone. I read this to my kindergartners (it would be appropriate for any age, the writing would lend to a descriptive writing lesson) and they loved how most skin colors were described with food terms. I introduced multicultural crayons to them afterward and they loved it.
