I was a Marine in 2/5 who served in Ramadi in 2004-2005 and in 2007. I'm only about 80 pages in but so far I love this book. I was amazed about how it brought back the feelings I felt over 10 years ago. Scott tells it through the eyes of someone who has truly been there. I would highly recommend this book to both vets and anyone interested in stories of passionate men who fought for their freedom.
This is leadership, commitment to the mission, and to men under his command. Leadership that transcends the authority. Here you see the implementation of training, discipline, common sense, valor, bravado, and a dedication to the mission in complete harmony. This in a nutshell are the essential ingredients which contribute to mission accomplishment!
This is the best book I have read about the fighting in Iraq. It tells a straight forward story of a units time in Iraq. It tells about what they were able to do to help the situation and also what they couldn’t do. You are connected to the individuals in the story and are with them before and after the battles. The author tells of his problems after he came home as well and what happened to his men after. He was a great leader to his men. I highly recommend this book.
Major Huesing tells the story of the heroism, bravery and the dedication that his Marines had to their mission, their brothers in arms and though I doubt it was his intent, to their commander. This is a fantastic book by a man looking to highlight the constant struggle of his troops to accomplish a difficult mission. It becomes evident from the first few pages that not only did he love his Marines, but they loved him as well, I would have been honored to have served under a commanding officer like Scott.You will not regret buying this book and I guarantee you will be hooked before you finish the first chapter.
Fantastic account of company level operations in Ramadi during the surge, and the challenges of combat leadership. Scott Huesing deftly communicates his experience on the strategic, tactical and personal level. Looking forward to following him into his next book.
Major Huesing does an amazing job telling the story of his marines mission in Ramadi during the surge. He puts a human face and emotion to the men fighting for our freedoms. It’s a book of leadership and love of brotherhood. The book arrived on a Tuesday afternoon, I finished it by Wednesday. I was drawn in, and couldn’t put it down until I knew how the story would end for each of the marines in the book. Thanks for your service. #savethebrave
Being part of Echo Company 1st Platoon under the command of Maj. Huesing was a great honor. He put his heart and soul in leading us through some very tough times. This book did a great job of showing the hardships we faced while over there. Thank you for not only being an outstanding leader but also for telling our story in words we ourselves would never been able to find ourselves!
Marines are different than you & I. Huesing writes "Killing is an unnatural act," but this book is as true to the bone & straight to the heart as can be.
