"Night Flights" isn't a fully-fledged "Mortal Engines" book. It's a collection of short stories that delves into the history of Anna Fang. The first of the three short stories is Anna Fang's origin tale. The second story is a splendid reinvention of the legend of Jack the Ripper. The final story feels rushed, but it answered a question I've always had about Fang: is she a freedom fighter, or a terrorist?"Night Flights" is a must-read for any fan of the Predator Cities Quartet. The book is short (can be read in one afternoon) and Ian McQue's illustrations are marvelous. Cynics may call "Night Flights" a quick cash grab before the Mortal Engines movie hits theaters in December. It isn't. The book is a genuine attempt to breathe life into one of the series most memorable characters. I recommend it to anybody who has at least read "Mortal Engines".Lastly, I was moved by the book's dedication to Jihae, the Korean-American actress who is portraying Fang in the film. Science Fiction and Fantasy stories are chock-full of white male characters [not that there's anything wrong with that], so it is delightful to see an Asian woman represented in such an inspiring way.

I'm a big fan of the Mortal Engines stories.I think they are exciting and well writen. So when I found this short story collection I had to get it. This book doesn't disappoint. Its a quick read consisting of 3 story's all about Anna Fang.the first one is pretty her backstory.the second one is a glimpse in how her heart begins to change and the third one leads into how she meets Tom and Hester for the first time. This book gives me hope that there will be stories coming from the world of Mortal Engines. The author does an excellent job of weaving so much into his stories. There are illustrations throughout the stories.I found them to beautiful and a perfect fit for the world the author as created. My only suggestion would be if they good be in color.I think they would look amazing especially seeing Anna in her signature red coat.

Three short stories about Anna Fang, and worth it for Mortal Engines completists. The illustrations are a very nice addition.Just a point of information: "Traction City Blues" seems to be a reworking of the separately sold World Book Day "Traction City" story, with the main character shifted from Spiff to Anna Fang. If you get this book, you probably don't need to get the other story.

Always great writing and stories if it's from Phillip Reeve.

This book is a prequel to the Mortal Engines series, and it pulls you into another world from the very first page. Between beautiful illustrations and a lush narrative, the reader follows the journey of Anna Fang, a strong-headed, smart, independent young woman living in a semi-dystopian world where cities themselves mimic predators and prey. The adventure is told in a three-part story featuring a mixture of Anna’s actions and remembrances which, all combined, give the reader a sense of suspicion as to what’s happening in the present. It follows her from her capture by a city that enslaves the people it catches, to her escape, and through two of her escapades – one teaching her that not all city folk are evil, and the other teaching her that not everyone is who they pretend to be. It’s a story that is rich in symbolism for real life as well as a dystopian future.I rate it five stars because it is very well-written and the character development made me deeply sympathetic to the characters’ plights. There are excellent moments of suspense, and the entire story was well-woven to provide a feeling of familiarity from the first few pages onward. Even though the subject matter was not what I would normally read (dystopian), it pulled me in and made me want to read more. I wouldn’t normally gravitate toward a book about the evil nature of people or cities that encroach on people’s freedom by becoming human-like in their predatory instincts, but the suspense was well worth it. If you like to be at the edge of your seat with a real page-turner, this is it. I have not yet read the Mortal Engines series, but I just purchased the first book and can’t wait to read it – all based on this account of the amazing Anna Fang.Reviewed by Isabelle G.,10, Mensa of Western Washington
