I really like this book but I have one complaint. Sometimes she is unnecessarily vague. I haven't worked in DOS commands in years so I am having to dredge too much out of my memory. Too much time spent in trial and error before I finally get things to work. Otherwise, it has been a wealth. I have used DITA in Framemaker and with a CMS and publishing system. This is the first time I have had to do DITA manually and this book has made it doable.

Best book for DITA, by far, if you're interested in customizing your PDF output.

This is a great little book. It's a quick and easy read that is very well written. Simple and easy to understand. Though there is a lot of information here, I do believe this is a general or basic introduction to starting seeds. Having said that, i think this is a very good place to start. I have since picked up a couple of other books on starting seeds, but did so because of what I read in this book. If you are a beginner or are thinking of starting seeds for the first time I think this is a great place to start. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for some basic or entry level knowledge on seed starting.

Simple and easy. Covers everything. Gives you ideas to make your own pots and even seed tapes. Or suggestions of what things you might need to be successful. Covers seeds very thoroughly. It's a valuable resource.

Found a few good ideas that I wasn't already doing.

I've been gardening for fifteen years now and have failed miserably at growing plants from seeds...until I read this book. It explains in clear language and detail about different types of seeds and specificaly what you need to do to germinate them and bring them along to the point they can be transplanted into your garden. I recommend this guide to anyone interested in gardening as a hobby.

Great informative book. Well written & organized. Had great difficulty reading some pages on my Kindle. Those pages must have been typed on a colored background or such and appeared very light. This was somewhat aggravating but worth struggling through since the info was so useful.

The year is 2000, i had just finished second grade in June. The month is July, and we have just been told there was going to be a new pokemon game. I didn't really care at the time, but when i got Pokemon Silver in 2000 i couldn't have been happier. I got myself the primia guide book originally back then and saw i could travel to Kanto, where the original pokemon took place AND could battle my charter from Red Blue and Yellow. 10 years later I am a senior in high school when i hear they are going to remake gold and silver!!! i was so happy they were my favorite pokemon games as a kid, i liked how it changed from day to night in the games. It took me three years to finally get heartgold. and as like before i had to get a guide to go with it. I was unhappy with how they were both split up but in the end was happy. I couldn't believe how much changed! It then inspired me to fix my original copy of silver....great guide book to explain on the changes with Gold and Silver and how they were similar too!

Pokemon games have generally been released a few every generation. The original games (Red, Blue, and Yellow) for the GameBoy are considered the 1st Generation games; the sequels built for the GB Color(Silver, Gold, and Crystal) are considered 2nd Gen, etc. That makes the DS gen games the 4th Gen PKMN games, and this PokeDex/Guide is built with that in mind. New and/or revised move-sets, Pokemon types, evolutions, natures, etc. are detailed and described as they are in the newer 4th Gen games, that is Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, PLatinum, and the new SoulSilver and HeartGold. In other words, those looking for a complete PokeDex for any other game should look elsewhere. Those interested in the 4th Gen games are in for a real treat.The ultra large (500+ pages) book does exactly what its title says; its a full Kanto guide and a full PokeDex, and it does both, for the most part, extremely well.The Kanto guide contains full and detailed maps (as are seen in-game), tips, and a complete walkthrough. The walkthrough doesn't start just as you enter the Kanto region, however, it assumes you've already beaten the Elite Four and have gained admission to the Hall of Fame. the guide features things like what Pokemon are found in what location, where items are, and dungeon "connections" (doorway "A" leads to this part of the map). The Battle Frontier, tips for the PokeWalker, the Saffari Zone, and a beefy section that details new battle strategies and PKMN teams all help to make this guide stand out from a simple bare-bones walkthropugh. A nice feature i found was a complete list of what event happens at what date, given that SoulSilver/HeartGold rely heavily on a real time clock, this feature is unbelievably important. Another neat feature was a simple recommend route to completing the entirety of your Kanto quest. The Kanto region is much less linear than the Johto region, and this "recommendation" could be very helpful to some.One noticeable and disappointing omission is lack of any "real" info on regular trainers. Gym Leaders have a list of used PKMN as well as tips on how to defeat them, but regular trainer have just a name. The guide doesn't show what PKMN a trainer uses. Its unfortunate and is the only reason why this product gets **** instead of 5*.The PokeDex section includes ALL 493 PKMN, and everyone has a half page devoted to it. Within its space things like possible abilities, moves (learned, TM, Move Maniac, Egg, and Battle Frontier moves all covered), evolutions, info (the same as the in-game PKDX info about the PKMN), egg type, and specially useful for completionists is the location in which you can find the PKMN (and in what 4th Gen game).All pages have an abundance of color and are never boring. Art, images, and tips can be found in EVERY page. The edges of the pages have a mostly solid color (EX, Walkthrough = orange, Dex = Red) that makes quickly opening up the book to a certain section very easy. The same concept is applied to the Dex, where 1st Gen PKMN can be found in the pages with a green hue on the top/bottom. remember that these colors can be seen while the book is closed, so the navigation is the 500+ page book is simple.The product is just about everything any PokeFan could wish for (the only flaw being the skimpy trainer detail), tips, strategies, PKMN info, maps, etc. Its built with a sturdy frame, is large, and the pages are nice and thick. At the very reasonable price, im very easily recommending it.

Taken together, volumes 1 and 2 do exactly what they are supposed to do. It may take some time finding what you need, but there is more information in these guides than any normal person may need, or even want. Beware of the word "Poster" though. When it comes to posters, Prima Guides are unsatisfactory. Their "poster" is smaller than a sheet of notebook paper, and if they say, "Giant Poster", they usually mean something just bigger than a sheet of notebook paper. But, I don't buy (or rate) these guides for the posters, I buy them to get the most out of each game. Overall, one could not expect more from a game guide.

This guide was just what I needed to be the ultimate Pokemon player, I was great before this just help you reach that extra level. Has all the information you could possibly need, not to mention it was worth the very inexpensive low cost. Great buy for the buck.

I can't recommend this guidebook highly enough! It has a detailed pokedex with egg moves, battle point moves available at the battle frontier, TM & HM moves, and more for all 493 pokemon to-date. The walkthrough it good, but even more useful are details on how to get gym leaders and trainer numbers and times to call for guaranteed rematches, and details of which pokemon are used by each gym leader, the elite four and champion, and the final battle with Ash/red along with useful moves and pokemon types to defeat them. It also includes detailed info for different pokewalker routes, which pokemon can be caught at every Kanto location, TM's available at different locations, items held by wild pokemon, abilities and moves lookup and reverse lookup, safari zone details to catch level 50+ rare creatures, bug-catching contest guide and details, a weakness chart for all 493 pokemon... There's more, but these were all my favorite features.Overall, this is a must-have for SouSilver & HeartGold, but be aware that is only covers the Kanto region (the second half of both games). Volume 1 covers the Johto region (the first half of both games). If you are going to just purchase one, though, get this one, as it has the complete pokedex and MUCH MUCH MUCH more detailed and useful information.We have 4 pokemon players in our home, so we have 2 copies of this guide. Yes, it's that useful!

I swear my son has read this book cover to cover a dozen times. I never bought in to the whole game guide approach. It always seemed to me that it took all the fun and the challenge out of the experience. But I think it speaks to the magic and/or addictive nature of this franchise in particular that even with such a specific guide my son adores these games and guide. I don't think he would consider playing them any other way now.

Love it love it LOVE THIS BOOK. (am I shouting? ooops...sorry. I've VERY enthusiastic!)I'm a baker. I bake everything - most of my life cookies and cakes. Bread was always an uh oh. And forget about biscuits. I'd kill them with kindness, with too much thinking but most of all with handling. I watched Baking With Julia, I watched the bread monk guy, I watched them all, but it just didn't occur to me that you don't need to do much to bread items except leave them alone and let them make themselves.But I've learned some over time. I think the NYTimes guy who discovered the art of making artisan bread without doing a damned thing was my first eyeopener. Put all the stuff together, stick it in a bowl and leave it be for a day or two was the first step. So I learned bread. I also learned RECIPES are IMPORTANT. I had been doing the winging it thing. I like to wing. It's good to wing. But you can't wing unless you KNOW baking science. I was operating on cake/cookie science. Different thing altogether. Bread is something else, quickbreads even more so.Quick is the key!So back to this amazing little book - skimming through all the recipes (and there are LOTS of them) I picked up two really important things:ACID(LACTOSE), FAT, FLOUR w LEAVENING. that's your basic biscuit recipe.DON'T MESS AROUND WITH THEM MUCH, that carries over from bread. From cakes too. Leave the flour alone - let it do it's thing. It's alive. It doesn't like to be mauled.So with biscuits, for ALL these recipes, I throw everything in the refrig - flour too. cut in the fat, add the acid/milk/buttermilk/sour cream/yogurt, stir and fold it once, twice, three times as soon as it's a substancial mess of goopthrow some flour on top to give it body, form into a squareish thing about an 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shape. And carefully place in a buttered pan, then a hot oven.My oh my.I haven't tried EVERY recipe but I promise you I will. I haven't tried rolling out the dough for fear of mishandling, but I shall try once I have the feeling to. The only downside to all this easy deliciousness is they are terribly terribly fattening. AND you have to put butter on them because you HAVE TO! (and trust me when I say home made GOOD biscuits are like manna and Pillsbury and Bisquick don't even come into this - don't have a place at the table at all.)THIS is the BEST LITTLE RECIPE BOOK IN THE WORLD.

Although a Californian for decades, my better half originally hails from Georgia --- VERY PICKY about sweet tea, cornbread and biscuits. Having not been raised with any of these culinary items, I knew nothing about how they should be "just so" -- and although I learned to manage the sweet tea and the cornbread, I had no real idea of how biscuits were to be ideally prepared, or why it's such a thing with southerners.This book assisted me in hitting it out of the park on the first try! Now I am designated biscuits expert of the household, and to hear it told, they are the stuff of legend! As such, I would recommend this wonderfully written and beautifully photographed book to anyone wishing to get a handle on creating genuinely praiseworthy Southern Biscuits.

I'm somewhat experienced in making delicious Southern biscuits, but this book has definitely upped my game! It's amazing how little tweaks in amounts and ingredients can make such differences in biscuit tastes, textures, appearances, etc. I highly recommend this to any biscuit baker. . . even if she or he thinks she or he is already a pro.

I didn't realize, I knew nothing about baking, until I read this book. The proof is in the pudding, or in this case, the Biscuits. I've had incredible fun working my way through these recipes and my family has enjoyed the results. I read the introduction and was in awe of the knowledge. Spoiler Alert **** try the goat butter biscuits, crazy but true, the best recipe so far. ( I would have liked to add a picture, but they went quick.)

This is a wonderful book on many levels, but you need to be realistic and understand that even with this wealth of information you will need to practice and experiment.I watched Nathalie Dupree's wonderful television program on PBS for many years so I was already familiar with her style of cooking. One of the foods I could never get the hang of was biscuits. I grew up watching my mother and grandmother make them using only their hands to mix the ingredients. I tried that and came away with rocks because I had no idea about ingredient proportions. This book will help you explore proportions and techniques that will ultimately lead to a biscuit which will make you say WOW! It happened today after batch #8. In a three week period. That's a lot of biscuits, but, luckily they freeze well so we are stocked up. I have had some bumpy rides along the way to that WOW batch. Here's what I've learned:!. First three batches - Basic Southern Biscuits on pages 56-57. Followed the recipe exactly the first time and got heavy biscuits that didn't rise. Figured it was my fault so made them exactly the same another time but used a different oven, with the same unsatisfactory result. Even the *failures* were being eaten though. I then noticed that the White Lily Self-Rising flour sack had a biscuit recipe which was virtually identical to what I was using but with only half the fat. Made the batch using that recipe and it was really, really good. The lesson learned was that I wasn't compelled to follow the recipe exactly, but I needed to learn how and when to deviate.2. Batches four, five, six - Busty Yogurt Biscuits on pages 44 and 45, where yogurt is the liquid and fat combination. Fabulous taste (a little tangy), not much of a rise but that was fine. Yogurt and Heavy Cream Biscuits on pages 46 and 47 where there is once again no fat except what is found naturally in the cream and yogurt. These were super easy to stir together and, although not as tender as biscuits made with a specific fat ingredient, still very tasty. Cynthia's Real Life Pantry Biscuits on pages 48 and 49 using half-and-half and yogurt. Again, great taste, not as tender, not much of a rise. These three batches were made without telling my husband what I was using in the biscuit. He's a purist and when he found out about the yogurt he would have liked to complain but it was a little hard when he had eaten four of the biscuits with nary a whimper.3. Batches seven and eight - Fast-Food Biscuits on pages 78 and 79. These are what we think of as basic homemade biscuits. The first batch I followed the directions except I could not bring myself to put in an entire stick of butter with only two cups of flour. I did half the butter. The ingredient amount for the buttermilk made an exceedingly wet dough. I couldn't even pick them up to put on the pan with a bench scraper. I dumped them all back into a pile, sprinkled in more flour as I was folding and patting (kneading) until the dough was still moist but not wet. Excellent rise and taste, but I ended up using at least 1/2 cup of extra flour. The batch today was this biscuit again, but I put together everything I had learned so far: began with more flour, used part butter part vegetable shortening, and used less buttermilk. Resulting in a beautifully risen, flaky, tender, moist, brown, WOW biscuit.There are still many, many recipes I want to try from this book but for me it was important to get the basic biscuit making skill down first. I now know how moist I want my dough to be, I am not worried about having to deviate from the ingredient measurements if I have to, and I have worked out in my head the science of what makes a biscuit light or dense, tangy, tender, or length of time for cooking in both of my ovens. This book is a starting point for anyone wanting to make biscuits. These are suggestions for the most part, not hard and fast rules. Experimentation will be necessary. If your first batch works out perfectly, then you have earned your Golden Biscuit Badge!The book is written in such a way that any recipe may be tried by a cook as a first attempt - you can skip around and there is no absolute order of experimentation. Therefore, there is a whole lot of repeated information. Each and every recipe for biscuits repeats each step involved in making a batch. When I was reading through this book from cover to cover that almost drove me crazy. Ultimately I started looking for the anecdotal writing at the beginning of the recipe, the ingredient list itself, the oven temperature and then skimmed the instructions for any change from the norm. Recipes are included for what to do with leftover biscuits, how to embellish biscuits, things you can make from basic biscuit dough, desserts and other tasty sounding ideas. It is indeed a complete cookbook dedicated to the biscuit. Most of the recipes give the quantity of biscuits made based on a 2" biscuit cutter. My husband looked at those tiny biscuits and laughed. I tried a 2.5" cutter and a 3" cutter. He, of course, likes the 3" biscuit cutter best.My husband is a Southern man from head to toe. For more years than I care to count I have endured comments about Miss Sammie's biscuits down at the diner. Well guess what, my WOW biscuits today put me right up there even with Miss Sammie. Folks, that's as good as it gets.Added July 8, 2011 -- This book strongly recommends that you use a baking powder brand which does not contain aluminum. I never knew ANY baking powder contained aluminum. Believe the authors, it makes a huge difference in the resulting product you make. They suggest several different brands in the book and my local supermarket had one.I made the buttermilk cranberry scones today and I'm thinking I will have to hide them or ask my daughters to come over and take them away from us....they are that good! Next time I'll mix them up in my food processor though. I thought my arm was going to give out before I got that very large batch of dough ready. 4 1/2 cups of flour and 1 cup of butter using a pastry cutter? Whew!
