Seagan Eating: The Lure of a Healthy, Sustainable Seafood + Vegan Diet, by Amy Cramer Lisa McComsey

Review

Self-proclaimed foodies and “research fanatics” Cramer and McComsey, coauthors of The Vegan Cheat Sheet, team up once again, this time with a new diet to share. It still consists primarily of plant-based foods, but now includes omega-3 fatty acids sourced from sustainable seafood. Per American Heart Association recommendations, it allows for seafood two to three times a week, with the occasional indulgence permitted. This charming guide shares the authors’ personal stories and reasoning for their “cheating” on plants, detailing also why they’ve forgone meat, dairy, and eggs. Cramer and McComsey include an essential shopping list for the diet staples, including baking ingredients and freezer items. And before they go into how to shop for sustainable seafood, they make sure to explain why fish is the healthiest way to obtain essential fatty acids. The bulk of this guide covers all the bases: essential kitchen tools, meal plans, and recipes, along with instructions for navigating restaurants and understanding food labels. Also included are vegan foods to avoid and notes on organic foods, superfoods, and GMOs. This little powerhouse diet will appeal to those looking for healthy nourishment without a militant plan.---Publishers Weekly

Really liked the book. Recipes look good and easy to prepare. Loved the "Good Catch/Bad Catch" section. Nice for reference. I was vegetarian/vegan for years and wanted to incorporate sustainably caught seafood back into my diet. I find the authors very relatable.

OK, I know eating a total plant-based diet would be good for me (and everyone else), and I greatly admire those who have the dedication to "go vegan." That's not necessarily my path, but thanks to Amy and co-author Lisa McComsey I'm getting close. Seagan Eating provides lots of easy recipes for vegan and seagan dishes at home. I mostly eat in restaurants, which don't usually have good vegan dishes on the menu. But almost any decent restaurant has seafood dishes available. Seagan Eating has good tips on how to figure out which are healthy and sustainable, which are "questionable," and which are downright "bad catches." By sticking to the good seafood items and avoiding the usual red meat and chicken dishes at home or on the road, I've greatly reduced the proportion of meat and dairy in my diet while increasing my plant intake, all without any sense of being on a "restricted" diet. I don't claim to be a vegan, or even a "seagan" ... but I do eat much better these days following the concepts in Amy and Lisa's new book.

I've been Seagan for years, and didn't know it! I've always cringed at labels and while I gravitate towards a vegan lifestyle, I do appreciate occasional (wild caught and sustainable) seafood. I spend a lot of time in vegan communities, yet still held this secret inside. I started a similar lifestyle more than 3 years ago, after doing my own research, and lost 125 pounds and completely transformed my health. When I saw this book on the new release list, I had to buy it just to see how our dietary choices compared, and hopefully to find a few new recipes or ideas. What I found was a very nice collection of info to help just about anyone get started on a better path.Seagan Eating is a small, lightweight book that includes an ample primer on seafood varieties, health information, and a large selection of recipes. You'll learn which seafood is bad or good, and which is even better. I learned a few things! I appreciate the focus on nutrient density throughout the book, also a focal point of my own lifestyle.Included is a 21 day menu that includes 3 meals and 2 snacks daily, with occasional desserts. They do look good and I think they would be easy for most people to follow. My own menu plan differed in several ways, as mine included many more vegetables and fruits, and I prefer to go lower on grains. I'm also just not into desserts and snacks, other than fresh fruit. My choices were based on my own personal health and nutritional needs and yours may vary as well. The menu is perfect for anyone who needs a structured program to get them started, or as a starting point for those who like to do their own thing. The recipes in this book contain a good amount of nutrition information, which seems to be lacking in cookbooks lately, and I appreciate the extra effort. Most of the recipes serve at least 4, but appear to be easy to cut down if necessary.* Rich Seafood Dishes includes 25 recipes such as Coconut Crusted Trout, Seafood Newburg, and Arctic Char Puttanesca* Creamy Soups of the Sea - 3 recipes including classic Shrimp Bisque* Homestyle Classics and Comfort Food - 10 family friendly vegan recipes such as Spinach Pie and BLT Sandwiches.* Sumptuous Sides and Snacks includes10 recipes, mainly potatoes and crackers* To-Die-For Dips and Dressings: 3 recipes including Ranch, Caesar, and a smoked sardine dip* Wake-Up Call Best Breakfasts: 4 recipes for biscuits, granola, oats, and French toast* Indulgent Desserts: 11 recipes - Cookies, candies, brownies, and other classic dessertsThis book keeps on going with tips on GMOs, superfoods, and clear information on which foods are better for you. It's a small book and the info isn't extensive, but it's an excellent start which should get you interested in a new way of eating.I like this book because it's a no-nonsense approach to a healthier lifestyle. The recipes should appeal to anyone who is resistant to giving up meat and dairy, but still want to do better. I would have loved to have seen more vegetables to fill out the rainbow, but overall it's a very good collection of advice and recipes. I would easily recommend this book to my own sisters, and have already told them about it.

I changed to a vegan diet, but couldn't give up fish. So I googled that and found the label (of course there's a label) for this diet is seaganism. This book gave me the inspiration and great recipes to start my journey. Within 2 weeks of starting seaganism, my chronic excema cleared up, and I lost 14 lbs without exercise. When I told my husband I was becoming a seagan he raised his eyebrows and said "WTH is that"? Now he has lost 11 lbs in 3 weeks, but he cheats and eats steak...

The recipes in this book by Amy Cramer are delicious and so easy to prepare. I have two teenage daughters and they are both into healthy eating. They LOVE the meals I have made from this book, especially the Shrimp Fried Rice. I love the trout piccata. We all love the Eggplant Parmesan. We have only just begun to explore this book. It has only been out one week and we are in love with Seagan Eating already.

I am open ot the premise of the book. It was a very quick read. Not a lot of in depth research support cited. But it is thought provoking for people who avoid animal products in their diet for health reasons. It was worth the cost, but probably not a book that I will refer back to or use very often.

This book is a very valuable resource. I've been vegan for many years, and like the authors have explored bringing seafood into my diet recently. It is well organized, and will guide you through the healthiest ways to incorporate seafood into your diet. Similar to their previous book, The Vegan Cheat Sheet, there are many simple, delicious recipes included. The 21 day menu is a great way to get started and easy to follow. The book covers everything from shopping staples for your Seagan kitchen to a survival guide in the restaurants and foods to avoid altogether. For those looking to kickstart a healthy lifestyle this book will be a valuable tool.
